Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chloe Mitchell, founder and owner of Maison De Foy, located in Bronx, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Maison De Foy is a Black-owned candle company inspired by my love for my late grandmother Janice Foy. As a poet and author and a lover of flowers, I chose to incorporate poetry on my candle labels as well as pieces of flowers in each vessel. I want people to feel the softness and beauty through my writing and the fragrances I've chosen for each candle. Every candle is significant, from the title of the candle, the quote, and the fragrance. Maison De Foy is a collaboration of the love, admiration, and gratitude I have for my grandmother.
Tell us about yourself
I am a poet, author, and storyteller. I am a huge lover of poetry, flowers, and candles. I've always incorporated candles in my self-care routine growing up because they always made me feel calm, relaxed, and at peace whenever I burned them. I had this idea to start a candle company for about three or four years before I became serious about it. Once I put things into fruition and made things tangible, I became obsessed with creating beautiful scents with complementing quotes and candle titles. I have put so much effort, love, and dedication into ensuring that Maison De Foy is authentic and truly represents me, the people I love, and the lifestyle I am passionate about.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Seeing how far I've come and the hard work I continue to put into Maison De Foy. I love the feedback I receive from clients, and knowing that I can be a part of their daily routine really makes my day. When the clients express how much they love my candles reassures me that I am doing at least one thing right. Making a positive influence on someone's mood and life is rewarding.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Staying consistent and motivated even when sales are not where you want them to be.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do not stall.
- Have no fear of failing.
- Stay faithful and consistent.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
There is always room for you. Do not let anyone deter you from the dreams that you have.
