Turning Passions into Viable Businesses - Maggie Karshner
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Maggie Karshner, owner of Maggie Karshner, Self-Employment Coach, located in Seattle, WA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I help people turn their passions into viable businesses. I'm a business coach who focuses on self-employed businesses. Basically, if you wanna turn your thing into a healthy income, I'll show you the business and marketing stuff to get you there!
Tell us about yourself
I started coaching as I was trying to figure out how to get my work to align with my purpose. I knew I had strong business acumen but wasn't sure how to turn that into a job. After a few "dream jobs" fell flat, I realized I needed to do self-employment coaching. And to do that, I'd have to give up looking at job descriptions. Eight years later, I'm still loving it! Playing with my favorite puzzles (small businesses) and helping people live their dreams is awesome!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I kinda knew from the beginning that this was going to happen. (The how and when were TBD, but it was definitely going to happen!) So I think if I went back in time and told the past me all about my business, she'd probably be most impressed by how my budget has grown and that I pay for VA and social media support now!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest part of owning a business is the steadfastness you need in such a highly fluctuating environment. I've known about this from before I started, and it can still catch me off-guard. It's also the topic that comes up most consistently in my coaching sessions. But when you stay the course, use solid data points, and make changes from a grounded place, it's definitely manageable! (And it gets easier over time!)
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
DO IT. (No copyright infringement intended here.) This is the best time to launch a business in my eight years of doing this work, and it's WAY easier than it was in the 90s and before. Employers continue to be inconsistent and unreliable. Self-employment lets you put your livelihood under your control and do something you enjoy even more and with less corporate B.S.!
