Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in financial development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Maggie Germano, Founder of Maggie Germano Financial Coaching, located in Syracuse, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a financial writer, speaker, coach, and educator for women. I help women develop a healthy relationship with, and take control of, their money. I do this through one-on-one coaching, writing for my ForbesWomen column, speaking, and podcasting. My customers are millennial women who generally have their life together but still haven't figured out how to make their money; let them live the life they want to live.

Tell us about yourself

I started my business because I wanted to do something that would make a direct positive impact on women. And I wanted to do something that would allow me to use my skills to help empower women. As a personal finance nerd, I knew that using my financial knowledge and compassion would make me a good financial coach. I feel motivated every day to continue spreading financial literacy to women so that they can take control of their money and have power over their own lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of my biggest accomplishments was being a panelist on Yahoo! Finance. I also felt like I'd arrived when I was quoted in The Atlantic and the Wall Street Journal.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a business owner can be pretty lonely! Especially if you are a solopreneur. You're the only one responsible for working on your business every day, which can be a lot of pressure and also pretty lonely.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find yourself an entrepreneur community. Being a business owner can be isolating, so it's important to find a community of people who understand the struggle and can be there to support and motivate you along the way.
  2. Don't compare yourself to other business owners. You never know what another person is going through or what they've had to do to continue running a business. No one else is perfect, so focus on your own growth and success.
  3. Separate your business and personal finances! Open a business bank account as soon as you establish your business. This will keep things a lot less confusing when tax time comes around.
