Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Janet Platt, owner of Maestros Dog Haus Inc., located in Bloomfield Hills, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a Gourmet Doggie Deli. We cater to pet parents who want only the most nutritious food and treats for their 4-legged children. We house make single-ingredient treats.

Tell us about yourself

We started making our bestselling chicken chips in 2008 when we found out that our supplier was using Chinese sourced chicken. We opened Maestros Dog Haus in Bloomfield Hills in 2012, hiring a certified chef with pet nutrition interest to expand our assortment. We also sell 4 & 5star commercial dog and cat foods, including kibble, freeze-dried raw, and frozen raw foods.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Expanding our business in 2016, opening our second Maestros Dog Haus on 9 miles in Ferndale, MI.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Knowing that many people are not concerned about pet nutrition and many Vets are not supportive of our efforts.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find the void.
  2. Write a business plan.
  3. Do whatever it takes to do what is needed to make this business successful.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Our Bloomfield Hills location has a kitchen that makes products for the Maestros Deli assortment for both stores. We have a limited cat assortment, but our Ferndale location has an extensive Cat presentation.
