It's Time to Heal Your Dry Skin - MadeOn Skin Care

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an e-commerce business that sells a 3-ingredient hard lotion bar to people with extremely dry skin and/or mild eczema who are looking for relief without prescription drugs or harsh ingredients.

Tell us about yourself

After finding that this simple recipe for a lotion "bar" worked so incredibly well for my dry, cracked skin, I started selling it at a local farmer's market with my two sons, ages 8 and 10 at the time. After a season of successful selling (without a degree or background in selling), we took the business online, choosing the name "hardlotion.com" because it was unique and it described the product perfectly. My husband and I had six children at the time. Within a year, we were able to replace my husband's income and make the skincare line our full-time income. Having the entire family learn and grow the business is what motivates us every day. We offer far more than skin care products - we teach our customers what triggers their skin issues so they can get to the deeper issue and find lifelong relief.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Raising our kids to be entrepreneurs. Our older five kids are now independent adults who run their own unique successful businesses without any debt or college degrees.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Stopping at the end of the day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Involve your kids, no matter what their age. It doesn't have to be physical work (although that's a good idea). It can be the conversations around the table. Doing so makes them feel important, and they will be motivated to get really good at something that brings value to others. (We"ve actually launched a site to show parents how to do this: www.parenttheirpassion.com) If they launch a business before they turn 18, they'll have success and likely avoid a useless college degree.
  2. Utilize a really good support system. They'll help turn down the voices of fear or skepticism in your head.
  3. Bootstrap your business, especially if you're teaching biz skills to your kids.
