Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Andrea Bombino, founder of Made to Mother Co, located in Jersey City, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Made to Mother Co is reimagining the future of work for mothers. As a consultant for global businesses, I help companies create programs, policies, and resources for parents and families in the workplace to improve employee satisfaction and retention. This often involves gathering data, reviewing exit interviews, and speaking with people that have returned from parental leave to present suggestions for changes that can be made within the organization that will impact the growth of the business through employee satisfaction and retention.

As a Career Coach and LinkedIn Expert, I help women navigate the modern workplace. My 1:1 clients are career-driven women who are typically pregnant or in the early years of motherhood. What makes my career coaching unique is my mother-centered approach. I use my background in Sociology, Motherhood Studies, and Matrescence facilitation alongside my recruitment and business experience to reimagine women's experience in the workplace.

When working with clients 1:1, I help normalize the experiences of being a working parent while assisting with practical career coaching. Creating/updating resumes or LinkedIn profiles, nailing interviews and negotiation skills, and building a personal brand that helps them stand out. I aim to serve my clients to allow them to build confidence in themselves and cultivate inner trust and knowing that they can rely on in all aspects of their lives.

Tell us about yourself

I started working on the concept for Made to Mother Co when my daughter was six months old. From the moment I found out I was pregnant, I wondered how motherhood would impact my professional career. Then, as I executed my own return to paid work from maternity leave, I saw the gap in how mothers are (or aren't) re-onboarded in the workplace and how this can leave them feeling disconnected from a career or company they previously loved.

I took seven years of my experience in sales and recruitment on Wall St., working with the world's largest banks, and coupled it with my five years of sales experience working with recruitment agencies at LinkedIn to create and launch Made to Mother Co.

I am a certified Life Coach, Matrescence Facilitator, and Motherhood Studies practitioner. With a degree in Sociology and a passion for all things motherhood and work-related, I aim to change the way we see motherhood and the workplace and transform parental leave policies across America.

At first, I started working with women 1:1 and then began hosting online group programs because I saw that women were strongest when they felt witnessed by others experiencing similar life situations. Later, I realized that if I was really going to change the future of work for women, I needed to impact change on the corporate level. Seeing women gain new confidence in themselves and their careers after entering motherhood makes every coaching session worth it. Seeing businesses begin to be open to change from within ignites the fire within me to keep going in this space and advocating for change in the workplace.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner thus far has been conceptualizing a different version of career coaching and consulting, which places mothers at the center. It's not easy to go against the grain and challenge the status quo. I've become an advocate for women in the future of work, which has been both intimidating and rewarding. Recognizing the need for change and pushing forward to make those changes has taken a significant amount of time, dedication, resilience, and humility.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest parts of being a business owner is wearing all the hats: CEO, CFO, COO, talent and execution, etc. It means carving out time to work ON your business as well as IN it and continuing to make time to constantly learn and educate myself so that my up-leveling will benefit my clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Never stop learning and up-leveling. Be curious and assume you have lots to learn.
  2. Remember, you have the ability to make a difference. Trust in your vision and abilities.
  3. Feel the fear and do it anyway.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

It can be lonely as a solopreneur. My recommendation is to surround yourself with other entrepreneurs and visionaries. Create connections with others in your industry and promote community over competition. We are so much stronger when we cheer each other on.

If you're a business owner, decision-maker, or career-driven mama, I'd love to hear from you. Please get in touch with me if I can serve you in any way: andrea@madetomotherco.com
