Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marisa Smith, Owner of MACmomorganizing, LLC., located in Madison, NJ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the owner of MACmomorgananizing, LLC, a full-service professional organizing company based in the NJ, NY metro area. My team and I help busy families and small business owners create systems that are both functional and beautiful so that their homes or offices become a place of calm. My team and I also provide move management services to help pack/unpack/declutter before and/or after a move or renovation.
Tell us about yourself
I started my business in the fall of 2020 when my youngest started high school. I wanted to get back into the workforce, but I also wanted more flexibility than my decade-long career in Oncology Clinical Research had afforded me. I knew that I had an eye for design and a passion for organization, and I was always told by friends and family that my home was the most organized home they had ever seen. A friend of mine was looking for help unpacking and organizing her home after a huge renovation, so she asked for my help.
I started posting photos of my work on Instagram, and one client led to another, and before long, I had hired my first assistant. My business quickly grew from word of mouth and client testimonials, and now I have a team that helps me with our projects. Being a professional organizer is very fulfilling, but it is also a lot of work. The days can be long, and we are often on our feet for hours at a time, but seeing the positive impact that we have on our clients' lives makes it all worthwhile.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been growing my team. I have four organizers who work with me as well as a social media manager, a graphic designer, and an installer. Together we are able to provide our clients with a full-service experience.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing that comes with being a small business owner is having a work/life balance. I work seven days a week in some aspects of running the business. When I'm not at a client's house, I'm working on the back end of the business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
