Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in web design but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mackenzie Roy, Founder of Wicked Web Design & Development, located in Manchester, NH, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Wicked Web Design & Development. I design and build websites for both small mom-and-pop shops to larger agencies. My clients are all involved in different lines of business, allowing me to be creative with each and every one of them.
Tell us about yourself
In 2012 I completed my undergraduate degree in criminal justice and came to the realization that it wasn’t my true passion. Following graduation, I worked at a few different companies until I was presented with an amazing opportunity. One of my friends informed me of an entry-level position at a web development company, and that’s where I found my passion. The position presented the opportunity for me to learn on the fly and in my own way. To further my education in this field, I also engaged in online courses to strengthen my skillset. As my experience grew, so did my role and responsibilities. I became the head designer and WordPress developer at the company. When I started at the company, I never knew I’d be finding my true passion. I love the creativity, problem-solving, and constant learning that comes with the job.
In the web development industry, contractors are utilized regularly. When the company I was working for was transitioning its business model, I was given the opportunity to become a contractor or stay on as an employee. Weighing my options, becoming a contractor, and starting my own business really excited me. Being able to set my own prices, have control over my finances, and have more control over the customers I worked with excited me. I have always been a person who believes you must challenge yourself with things that scare you to grow as a person. Starting a company terrified me, but with support from my peers and friends, I found the confidence in myself to make it happen.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I’ve just begun this journey as a small business owner in January of 2023, but so far, my biggest accomplishment is the financial freedom it has allowed me.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Time management. Web design and development take a lot of time, and it’s extremely easy to get sucked into one project. It’s critical that I’m airtight with my schedule and what I allocate my time to. Ensuring that I give myself time to prospect and engage with new clients is how I’ll continue the success I’ve had so far while also maintaining the high quality of work my clients have come to expect.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Not being afraid to ask for help from your support system. Having people in your corner who can help provide guidance has been critical since I started my business.
- Networking. One of the best sources of new leads can come from making new connections and getting your name out there.
- Ensuring that you take time to focus on yourself. If you don’t take time for yourself, you’ll eventually get burnt out. You never do your best work when you’re burnt out, and your clients deserve the best you.
