The Perfect Blend of Beauty and Artistry - Mackenzie Murphy

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mackenzie Murphy, owner of Mackenzie Murphy Make-up Artistry, located in Seattle, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

What started as local prom and graduation photo applications in my early years of artistry quickly became everything from weddings to film and marketing campaigns, with an adventurous move from my home state of Washington to Valencia, Spain.

My makeup application style has evolved into a fusion between my original classic Hollywood glamour and my now more clean and minimalistic European beauty. This blend of methodology makes for various clients, ranging from brides seeking a long-lasting, more refined look and brand owners needing some quick and simple polishing details for a photo shoot promoting either skincare or a more modern sustainable foundation.

Tell us about yourself

As a child, my interests were always centered around the arts-specifically painting and fashion. So it was no surprise that by the time I could start experimenting with makeup, I became fully mesmerized by the perfect meshing of beauty and artistry.

I began booking clients at the age of 16. It wasn't until I started working as an artist for the global mega-brand MAC Cosmetics that I got a real eye into the beauty industry and what it means to be a freelance makeup artist, as well as refine my own personal style. Through the many seasons of trends and viral looks, what always stands out to me is those who create these looks and push ahead through the repetitive beauty norms- this always inspires me to create without limits.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've certainly made myself proud by working alongside brands that I'm a big fan and supporter of and collaborating with artists I look up to. Yet, without a doubt, my most sense of accomplishment comes from a satisfied bride who's anticipated this day and considered the outcome of this look many more times than I can imagine. To fulfill their vision takes great attention and even sometimes means modifying your own style, in the end, growing your skillset!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I could imagine this is very unique to all business owners, considering most business models entail teamwork and collaboration. As it is autonomous, my work can tend to feel overwhelming and ever-changing. Thanks to the vast internet and web of beauty community entrepreneurs, I have been able to share my thoughts and doubts with what feels like fellow colleagues.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Passion and consistency make a great foundation for any business.
  2. Failure is completely necessary for growth.
  3. There is no correct timing or order to get started.
