Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Maura Knowles, Founder of Mac-n-Mo's, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Mac-n- Mo's is a health and wellness company. I'm a Certified Integrative Health Coach, specializing in people who struggle with weight, autoimmune disorders, diabetes, celiac disease, heart health, menopause, and those stuck in a food rut.

Tell us about yourself

I created Mac-n-Mo's out of love after my dear late dad, Mac, a diabetic, survived two heart attacks and quadruple bypass surgery. He was discharged with very strict dietary guidelines. As an actor, singer, songwriter, and filmmaker with celiac disease as well as a near-death survivor, I was quite familiar with those challenges, which were further complicated since I’m also unable to digest grains.

One Saturday morning, dad begged me to bake something sweet, adhering to his new dietary restrictions. My challenge was to find real food ingredients that were gluten-free, grain-free, Keto- and Paleo-friendly, no-sugar, low-sodium, plant-forward, free of GMOs, and without preservatives. Mom and I went to numerous health food stores in search of as many tasty "legal" ingredients as we could find.

By the third store, mom asked, "What on earth do you plan to make with all this?" As a creative problem-solver, I shrugged, "I have no idea, but I’m going to do my best to create something "Morselicious" for dad." Morselicious is a combination of morsel and delicious." Thus, Mac-n-Mo's, my health and wellness company, was born! I do it in honor of my dad and all of us with health challenges.

My passion and expertise are to create my clients' "Morselicious Life Pie," a recipe for a full life. I don't believe in deprivation and am constantly Morselfing (modifying healthier versions) recipes for optimal and long-term health.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

What started as creating something healthy and tasty for my dear late dad became an integral business, and despite numerous challenges, I'm now a Board Certified Integrative Health Coach and am hired to teach, guest speak, and develop recipes for people and companies all over the country.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Wearing too many hats, which I liken to when a chef prepares a meal. There is value in integrating my creative passions, talents, and skills by optimizing and managing each burner on my stove and in my oven. Sometimes my health coaching program is simmering on the front burner while my performance project incubates in the oven, and vice versa.

Not one to waste my talents and skills, maintaining creative flexibility has proven to be a golden asset. Having said that, it's not easy. My goal is to find a solid Marketing partner to help my business grow.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ask yourself if you'd be doing this whether or not you were making money. Is this your true passion?
  2. Be honest, because you'll be living, breathing, and sleeping your business. Being an entrepreneur is not for the weak. Create a realistic budget. Ask for help from experts.
  3. Be sure to celebrate the tiny accomplishments along the way. OK, that's four tips, but I believe all of these are vital.
