Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in interior design but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan Siason, Owner of M Studio Interior Design, located in Long Beach, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We exist to spread good vibes and reinvent lifestyles for the incredible homeowners that we have the privilege of serving with our interior design services.
Tell us about yourself
I'm a Filipino-American interior designer, born and raised in San Diego, CA. After working in property management and real estate during my early years of college, I found a "life spark" that really lit me up... through a fun series of events in my life, I switched my educational focus to interior design and never looked back. Being able to contribute to other people and the spaces that shape their lives is incredibly rewarding and something that keeps me going in my business. During the pandemic, I fell in love and moved to Long Beach, CA, and serve homeowners from San Diego to Long Beach and everywhere in between and beyond.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
While the designs we've collaborated on with our clients and contractors have won many awards, including a nationally recognized award, and have been featured in various publications, I think the biggest accomplishment is that sense of contribution in supporting our clients with redefining their homes and bringing the vision to fruition for them to enjoy.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
It's incredibly rare that this happens, but it does- managing expectations or collaborating with homeowners that micro-manage or have very "interesting" (for lack of better words) personalities is THE hardest thing that comes with being a business owner in ANY industry. It might just be the hardest thing as a human being to work with people that are not in alignment with the experts of the industry, LOL! It's always a goal to ensure the best results while having fun and creating an experience as a team... it's something that my small team and I strive for. But at the end of the day, we cannot please everyone.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Surround yourself and build relationships with like-minded people, the type that can support you in your business goals and vice versa.
- Don't forget to take care of yourself, as self-care is important for anyone's growth and development.
- Keep going, don't give up... AND ALWAYS BE KIND.
