What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a number of business activities: first, keeping my brand visible to generate personal appearances, speaking engagements, and corporate endorsements/ambassadorships. Second, I have a number of responsibilities that go with serving on the Automobile Competition Committee of the United States, representing North America on the FIA Women in Motorsports Commission, and as co-founder/President of the Women in Motorsports North America public charity.

Tell us about yourself

My passion started out as being a race fan and loving to drive fast. This leads me to have a 40+ year career in motorsports as a racing driver, consultant, and ambassador in the automotive and motorsports industries. Because it's my passion, I'm motivated every day to learn, stay current, coach, and motivate others in the motorsports industry to support women in motorsports.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I learned very early that I was an entrepreneur and not a corporate person. My first businesses were a manufacturers rep in consumer electronics and an auto parts distributorship. I learned the sales, service, inventory control, and communication elements of the businesses. This served me well when I became a professional race car driver, which is what I consider my biggest accomplishment: becoming a successful professional race car driver.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Knowing that you can't know everything you need to know, but you can always find the resources to learn what you need to know.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Develop a team of experts who can provide their knowledge and experience and who want you to succeed. Research your business, including your competitors. Always stay current because things change rapidly.

Never give up! Stay motivated! Be passionate about what you're doing!
