Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in interior design but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sun Ah Brock, Founder and Owner of LUX decor, located in Montreal, QC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Founded in 2003, LUX decor went on to become the epicentre of design in Canada as a design firm catering to design clients, independent designers with a trades program called LUX affiliate, and now, to the online public with SHOP LUX decor. Just as our team of interior designers creates beautiful spaces, we want to help independent designers build their businesses and help the online public recreate LUX decor's signature magazine-ready spaces.
As an expert design firm, LUX decor aims to weave its design philosophy into everything they create. The same goes for product selection. At shop LUX decor, you'll find a carefully curated collection of furnishings, lighting, wall art, and other decor accessories that have been tried, tested, and approved by designers.
Tell us about yourself
I have always had a passion for textiles, having studied fashion design and working with prominent fashion houses in Canada. I opened my first retail store in 2004 and went out on my own in 2019 to start building my dream of creating a design community while continuing to design beautiful homes for my clients. All by keeping a down-to-earth approach, I have a drive for design, women empowerment, and building the largest women-led design community in North America. In an industry that is typically seen as frivolous, I'm empowering women-led business owners and designers to grow their businesses and providing them with the tools, events, co-working space, and product knowledge they need to truly feel empowered to grow.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment was realized once I found my design community and discovered that sharing my experiences truly resonates with designers and business owners alike. I started to notice that people began to listen to what I was saying, take my advice and then put it into action. Having influence on your community can be a scary thing at times, however I am incredibly humbled and empowered to embody my best self everyday in result.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things would be to stay true to the vision while continuing to propel the team forward even when there are roadblocks. A small business means growing pains, and problem-solving is always at the forefront. When you start your business, it doesn't always go the way you thought it would go because you're establishing structure and operations along the way. I realized that a business needs to grow organically, and one must continue to power through and see the positive in what you have.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Understand where you are going to get your sales from. This will help you establish your client journey and grow referrals.
- Even if you are not a numbers person, you must make sure you understand your main KPIs because this will help you propel your business forward.
- Make sure you're well surrounded, and that includes employees, family, friends, and mentors. Who you surround yourself with inspires you and fosters growth and support for your vision.
