Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Melina Hicks and Kizzy Corbin, Founders of Lux + Alder, located in Honolulu, HI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Lux + Alder is a home fragrance line committed to nurturing connection and enriching experience. All-natural soy candles are hand-poured in the heart of Kaka'ako, HI, at our studio in Lana Lane. We use natural oils and wax because we don't believe in fake stuff. We value the integrity of our products, commitment to having a low impact on the planet, and the inspiration that comes from our community - working with artists, makers, and retailers to bring Lux + Alder to life.

Lux customers value handcrafted products, setting the vibe, and having a sense of humor. We love connecting with the people who love Lux and are so grateful that they choose to bring us into their homes.

Tell us about yourself

We are committed to creating intentional products with the highest quality materials in our mission to nurture connection and enrich experience via everyone's favorite accessory - sensual fragrance. We decided to go in on the business together because of a shared passion for candles and home fragrances, interest in expanding and growing a business, genuine respect and love for each other, and the excitement of a project we can apply our collective skills and creativity toward. Melina handles the production and fulfillment at Lux + Alder. Often, you'll find her in our Lana Lane Studio, setting the vibe with music. I do the marketing and sales side of things. We love being a part of the community of artists and makers at Lana Lane and taking on new adventures with our business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We're super proud of expanding the lux product line. When we took on the business, there were 5 scents and 3-holiday scents. For holiday 2021, we introduced the Naturels Collection. 4 additional scents in 100% recycled glass vessels.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balance. We are constantly working on navigating business and life and communicating our way through it all. It can be challenging to run a business together, but it's brought us closer and given us new skills, and we wouldn't want to be on this journey alone!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take things slowly but say yes to the things that scare you because you haven't done them before.
  2. Have fun!
  3. Community is key; lean in, check-in, and support each other.
