Wearable Art, Handcrafted Jewelry, & Customs - Lunniaya

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry and accessories but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cynthia Sorto, Owner of Lunniaya, located in Frederick, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I make wearable and functional art mixing different techniques and materials to create jewelry, jackets, shoes, home decor, and much more. My customers are people who like art and appreciate the beautiful colors and Folk Art from Mexico.

Tell us about yourself

I am a neurodivergent artist. I started selling pieces that people ordered from me here and there when the pandemic started, and we also received my eldest son’s Autism diagnosis. I decided to make art and be a voice for the autistic, ADHD, and neurodiverse populations in general. I want to be able to touch people’s hearts and let them know that we are here and we are capable of making our dreams come true, and we want acceptance and recognition.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The recognition and support of people when they see my colorful sculptures. And the encouragement of my customers to continue creating and offering to start workshops.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a neurodivergent person, procrastination is one of my struggles sometimes. The creation of content for social media, family, and house chores, and also trying to create my art can be overwhelming. I am also a woman and mother of 2 amazing kids, and that comes with no free time sometimes. But I have amazing support from my husband and also my mother, both of them are my strength along with my children.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find what makes your heart shine and be passionate about it.
  2. Don’t let anyone plant the seeds of fear and doubt in your head. Be you, trust yourself and work hard to make it happen.
  3. Surround yourself with people who push you to do and be better. And once you can, always give back. It’s an important part of growth. A truly successful person is one who shares with others.
