Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer Maagendans, founder of Luna Yoga, located in Montreal, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Luna Yoga is an environmentally-conscious, community-based yoga studio nestled in the heart of Old Montreal. Offering active and dynamic Yoga Flo and Jivamukti classes, the studio houses a calm and welcoming atmosphere in which students are encouraged to explore and discover their yoga path.

Our clients range from business people coming to yoga on their lunch break to Montrealers traveling from all different neighbourhoods to practice with their favorite teacher.

Tell us about yourself

I was a stressed-out university student who discovered something that helped me deal with the everyday ups and downs of life. After discovering yoga, I felt like I had the same life and same issues, but I just felt more clear-minded and more able to deal with things. I wanted to share what I had learned with anyone who was interested, so I opened my own yoga studio.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is making through the last two years. We've opened and closed so many times and dealt with so many regulation changes; it's a miracle we are still open. Old Montreal went from being a vibrant neighbourhood to being a ghost town. I'm so proud of our team for getting us through it all, and I'm happy to see the community starting to grow again.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is juggling all the different responsibilities and tasks. It's easy to get overwhelmed. It took me many years to learn how to detach and make time for myself. Having kids forced me to delegate many tasks and learn to trust others. It's a hard step to make, but so important!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you have a good support system for your business and your wellbeing.
  2. Hire a manager as soon as you can; don't wait until you have enough money to do it.
  3. Find a good task management system. I use Asana to help separate all the tasks and ideas.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If you are thinking of starting your own business, write down your ideas, make a business plan, and find a business coach that can help you get started. Focus on your intention, have patience, and make sure you take some time off!
