Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Krista DeCamillis and Jared MacGougan, owners and creative directors of Lumina Weddings & Events Inc., located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our business provides wedding videography and photography services to clients. Our clients are couples in their 20s to 40s who value cinematic videography and timeless photography.

Tell us about yourself

Krista:

I knew I wanted to start a business from a young age. I worked for a wedding planner for a few years during university and then became interested in wedding photography and videography, so I started working for a company in client relations. I met Jared at that company, and we decided to join forces a few years later to start Lumina! I find running a company in itself very motivating because it can be very rewarding, so it motivates me to keep working on it and growing. I also love working with our clients and am motivated to make sure they are happy with their wedding videos and photos!

Jared:

Starting off in the Vancouver Film Industry is where I learned my craft of all the different parts of video production, including cinematography, storytelling, sound design, editing, and professionalism. In the process of moving from the film industry to Lumina, I decided I would like to play a bigger part in the creative process rather than fulfilling one small role within a massive industry. What motivates me every day is the opportunity to further explore my interests and skills while creating for others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Krista:

Growing fast in a short amount of time and becoming well known in the Vancouver Industry for our work and reputation.

Jared:

Building up a large client base of happy clients, knowing that I've taken part in creating a valuable keepsake for clients for years to come.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Krista:

Trying to "unplug" from the business. It's hard to shut my brain off most of the time, and I find myself constantly thinking about the business. Also, wearing multiple hats and being pulled in various directions throughout the day.

Jared:

Finding structure and balance, as well as managing others and being a motivator to help individuals to produce their best work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start networking and building relationships with people in the industry you want to start your business in. Build connections.
  2. Find a purpose for what you are doing and have an emotional motivation behind it.
  3. Think of business like a community and make sure everyone in your team does well to motivate each individual to grow and build as a team within your company.
