Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marta Vasquez, Founder and CEO of Lulo Skin, located in Mississauga, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Lulo Skin is a clean skincare line manufactured in Canada with organic plants and fruits from South America. We are the only line in the world to bring the rejuvenating properties of the Lulo, a super fruit that is native to Colombia and has a very powerful content of vitamins C, E, and K.
Tell us about yourself
I was born and raised in Colombia, South America. I have lived on three continents throughout a 15-year corporate career. During my travels, I was always shocked at the disparities in ingredient regulations for personal care products across countries and learned that companies would go as far as the local legislation allows them to go. They use ingredients that are banned in other countries just because they can. It’s shocking to know that the extent to which we can contaminate ourselves with our personal products depends on the regulations of the country we live in!
I believe that safe, clean personal care products should be available to all! So in 2017, I left the corporate world to create a brand that combines the cleanest standards that I learned from around the world and the luscious botanicals of my homeland.
Growing up in Colombia surrounded by plants, animals, and natural food gave me a deep understanding and appreciation for the healing properties of nature and the role it plays in organic, conscious beauty. Knowing that I can make these properties available to the world is what motivates me to do what I do!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Being able to bring the incredible biodiversity of my native Colombia to the world makes me feel very proud! And creating a brand that brings my corporate knowledge, my travel experiences, my culture, and my current home country together makes me feel accomplished and happy.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Switching from the corporate world to the entrepreneurial world was a massive change, I'm proud of the growth it has brought to my life, but it also comes with a lot of challenges. Being an entrepreneur requires a complete change of mindset, more self-awareness, more self-motivation, and a level of resourceless that cannot be matched by a corporate career.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Learn to be your own source of strength and inspiration.
- Work on your mindset as much as you work on your technical skills.
- Be ready for very high highs and very low lows, you'll need resilience to continue, but you'll also have great accomplishments!
