Navigating Legal Waters - Ludwin Law Group

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in consultancy but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Adam Ludwin, Managing Partner of Ludwin Law Group, located in West Palm Beach, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Ludwin Law Group, I work with a variety of people and businesses. My clients really cover the entire spectrum. Unlike attorneys working in a large law firm where each of them specializes in one legal area, I have the benefit of practicing in many areas of law. This has ultimately given me a well-rounded base of knowledge and experience to draw upon. I have been successful across the board because there is often a significant degree of carryover between the various areas of law. This allows me to help a significant range of clients and take on a large variety of different cases.

We handle a large variety of cases, including landlord-tenant disputes, breach of contract, personal injury, and matters falling under the jurisdiction of maritime and admiralty law, like the Jones Act, the Commercial Instruments and Maritime Liens Act, and workmanship claims. Essentially, anybody who has been wronged or has been accused of wrongdoing is one of our potential clients. We assist corporations with litigation issues or disputes. We draft and litigate employment documents like post-employment restrictive covenants, which are non-competes and non-solicitation agreements. We handle legal cases of personal injury, including car accidents. We represent several marinas and repair facilities in South Florida and assist them with debt collection and litigating workmanship disputes. We assist boat owners with resolution over a broad range of matters.

Depending on where my client is in their legal journey is how I begin working on their case. On one end, we help individuals and companies before issues arise by drafting agreements that clearly and effectively identify legally significant issues and clarify parties' rights regarding those issues. Our primary goal in drafting these agreements is to protect our client's interests with the involvement of the opposing party, which significantly reduces the likelihood of a disagreement before things go wrong, thereby preventing unnecessary litigation in the future. On the other end of the spectrum, the problem between parties has already reared its head, and maybe the parties had an agreement, or maybe they didn't, but a third party has to step in and either negotiate or litigate a resolution.

Tell us about yourself

I was born and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia. I went to college at Pennsylvania State University, majoring in finance and minoring in business law, and I attended Nova Southeastern Law School. My lifelong passion has been centered around boats and boating.

I've been navigating the waters of the United States since before I could even walk. Over the years, I've gained extensive experience in boat operation and maintenance, primarily working with my father when I was younger, and now, I am on my own boat and owning a vintage Jeep as a hobby. I have a certification from the American Sailing Association, and I am a licensed pilot, a certified scuba diver, and a certified freediver. I recently began welding and blacksmithing and have been taking classes at The Guild, a blacksmithing school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The event that inspired me to become an attorney happened when I was 13 years old. My younger brother, who was six at the time, suffered a traumatic injury. During this challenging time, I witnessed the invaluable support provided by his attorneys, who were dedicated to his recovery and assisted our family when we needed them the most. This experience deeply inspired me to pursue a career in law. Consequently, as an attorney, I take my work seriously, and I am driven by a strong sense of duty to help individuals who have been taken advantage of or wronged in any way.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is winning the cases that other attorneys deemed unwinnable and overcoming the odds to prevail where others have doubt. I hold myself to high expectations, so I consider taking on such cases, fighting for my clients, and winning an ongoing accomplishment. However, I am just getting started.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part of running a business is ensuring everybody else is doing what they need to be doing. While I manage my own tasks well, staying on top of everybody else can be challenging. With so many balls in the air, juggling multiple responsibilities is a never-ending challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Before launching your venture, I'd strongly recommend gaining substantial experience in the field. Working for established firms with solid foundations and knowledgeable mentors can teach you the best practices and spare you the unnecessary struggle of reinventing the wheel.
