Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Liz Sauer Williamson, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Löwenzahn Organics, located in Berlin, Germany.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a mum and baby nutrition company. We focus on delivering high-performance organic products to mums and babies in their first 1000 days, starting from the pregnancy stage.
Tell us about yourself
Okay, so becoming a mum was definitely the catalyst. While I thought I was mentally ready for it, for what happens after birth – MAN, was I not prepared! I felt like I woke up stupid; how is this normal? Am I abnormal? Am I not coping??? Of course, the reality was and is that a lot of the mum topics have been glossed over and airbrushed out of polite conversations for generations, and so the drop-off after birth can be rough. And that's why we started this company, building products for babies, sure, but also for MUMS!!! And talking about the sometimes not-so-glamorous sides of parenting, so specifically, new mums don't feel the way we felt when we were thinking we were drowning in it all.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
We are fighting to create products that should exist to support healthy mums and babies even though the category is still stuck in the 1960s at times, especially for women. Our products are being recognized not only by our gorgeous customers but also by the independent national consumer watchdogs in Germany (where we are based), Stiftung Warentest, where we've been rated best in class of 2022 for our formula.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Juggling it all as a parent. The reality is, and we need to say this more often, to women and parents particularly, there's always a trade-off within our different parts of life, and yes, it's exhausting - both roles (parents and business owners) are exhausting. And yes, you will feel like you suck at both roles on different days or that you suck at both on the same day or hour!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- REALLY BELIEVE in what you want to do, you will spend more time on it than you think, so you have to love and believe in it.
- HAVE GREAT PARTNERS, and realize you can't do everything alone. I'm lucky I have a great co-founder in Alice Mrongovius and a great life partner in my husband, Julian.
- GROW A HARD OR WATERPROOF SHELL, you will get so many people to say NO or say you are crazy, and it will be hard to hear and will make you wobble, but you have to let it wash over you and do it anyway (refer to tip 1).
