Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alonda Alloway, co-founder of Loudoun Counseling & Coaching LLC., located in Sterling, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Loudoun Counseling & Coaching, LLC offers services for mental health, physical health, and financial well-being. Clients may come to us for psychological testing, mental health therapy, massage therapy, and/or financial guidance. We have professionals in each discipline on-site with virtual meeting options as well.

Tell us about yourself

Initially, I wanted to have a counseling center that offered stress-reducing elements such as yoga and other services for the body. My partner was working on business plans for a financial business at the time. I then thought it would be cool to have one office where someone could access all three services (mental health, physical health, and financial well-being) under one roof. That's how the concept for Loudoun Counseling & Coaching LLC began. Currently, the motivation continues by getting the satisfaction of seeing lives improved.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was the ability I had to leave my full-time, salaried career of 21 years to work for myself full-time. It was a struggle working multiple jobs while trying to get the business running properly and being a single mom. However, all the sacrifices were worth the leap. I now have a healthy work-life balance, and I love what I do.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is the ultimate responsibility. Everything falls on you. If revenue is low but you still have bills and payroll to meet - it's on you. If there is a complaint about something - it's on you. Entrepreneurship can get scary and lonely at times.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a career path you are passionate about so it doesn't feel like work.
  2. Find mentors to learn from because you don't know what you don't know.
  3. "If you build it, they will come." There is always someone out there who needs what you can offer.
