Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Logan Christopher, CEO of Lost Empire Herbs, located in Kansas City, MO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Lost Empire Herbs is a herbal supplement company. We focus on high-quality herbs and extracts, many of which your average person hasn't heard of, in our pursuit of "Performance Herbalism". This is the idea that herbs can help you be healthier and perform better, whether in the gym, the boardroom, or the bedroom.
While we have a wide variety of herbs that can help with many functions, our major demographic is 50+ men looking to restore optimal testosterone levels with our herbs like Pine Pollen and Tongkat Ali.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Logan Christopher. I run another business at LegendaryStrength.com. I first got into herbs to support my strength and endurance training efforts. These became my secret weapon for a long time. Fast forward a few years, my two brothers, and I started this company. Originally it was just to fund our own supply of amazing herbs, but it has grown nicely since the tabletop operation started. Personally, I am endlessly curious about becoming healthier and a high-performance human being. Being able to share what I learn along this journey fuels me
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
While I'm certainly proud of how the business has grown, the best thing is that we're in the business of changing lives. We regularly get testimonials like this:
"I must tell you that I have been using your products since June/July of 2018 and have never felt better: stronger, younger, more alert, more focused, healthier, and so much more! And on top of that, I just turned 60 and have a full-time position with the (Professional American sports team) as the Yoga/Breathwork Coach; therefore, I am on the go and in the clubhouse and part of the staff working 12-14 hour days from Feb. through October with only three days off a month. It is the proverbial "grind" that all the professional baseball players refer to, and I am bouncing around the clubhouse and moving and lifting and working out and more, right there with them!!
I tell everyone about your products, your company, and your amazing ability to educate as you share your products!!!! My life has changed, and I keep getting better, stronger, younger, healthier and more…every day in every way!!!! Pleasure to talk with you and allowing me to share!!!"
Peace & Joy,
Christine
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The most difficult things are the hard decisions. For instance, when the government issued lockdowns, I made the hard choice to lay off some of our staff. I didn't want to as I liked everyone on our team. But I knew the shutdown wasn't going to last just two weeks. And we had made the mistake of growing in too many directions before this, not paying enough attention to the lack of results we were getting. It needed to be done. So hard decision, digging ourselves out of the hole, and now we're in a much better space.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Ready, fire, aim. You'll learn more in doing the thing, far more than just the planning stages. Some preparation is good, but too many people yet become an excuse for inaction.
- Know your numbers. It seems a stage every entrepreneur needs to go through of not really understanding the books (P&L, B/S, cash flow statement, etc.). Learn that stuff as soon as you can so that you're not caught unaware when it goes bad.
- Find a successful model and replicate that. That doesn't mean not to be unique; you can absolutely do that while still following well-worn tracks for how to market as an example.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Do not neglect your health as you seek to grow your business. If you strive to be healthier, you'll have more energy, a better mood, the ability to focus, and more that will allow you to grow your business even better. There's a time for sacrifice but understand that that cannot be sustained. Taking care of your health as your business evolves is much better.
