Making Your Personal Style Vision a Reality - Los Angelique
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Angelique Myrick, owner of Los Angelique, located in Valley Glen, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
In 2010, I established a hair salon in my own home in the bustling metropolis of Los Angeles. My clientele hails from all over the world and walks of life, making it a truly cosmopolitan experience. I aimed to create a familiar environment in a city that can often feel overwhelming. My salon is a serene and peaceful haven, and my clients can feel the calming energy upon arrival, providing a break from the city's hustle and bustle. It's like visiting a friendly neighbor but with the bonus of a fabulous haircut and color or a makeup application. I also dabble in capturing the essence of my work by occasionally taking headshots.
Tell us about yourself
I was born and raised in the Netherlands and had a childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian due to my love for animals and everything sweet. However, my passion for taking care of others and the beauty industry, especially hairstyling, ignited during my early teenage years. With a fondness for wellness and beauty products, I discovered the joy of turning my natural inclination to care for others into a fulfilling career. It's as if I'm a child in a candy store whenever I delve into the world of beauty and well-being.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I take pride in my ability to foster meaningful relationships with others. For me, there's nothing more valuable than building a community. As a hairstylist and makeup artist, I enjoy sharing that passion with those around me. I strive to celebrate and appreciate the connections I've made and continue to make in my personal and professional life.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
As an entrepreneur, one of the most challenging parts is learning to roll with the punches of running a business. You have to be prepared for the ups and downs that come with the ride. This means you need to be open to new ideas to help your business thrive while also being grateful for the challenges and opportunities that come your way. You have to be adaptable during the slow times and manage the overflow of work during the busy times.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Engage in something that sparks genuine passion within you. Being an entrepreneur requires deep devotion. Running your own business is a journey that requires an entire investment and a strong sense of commitment to fulfill your ambitions.
- When you start working in your field, finding a teacher who wants to help you succeed is essential. A good teacher can show you how to overcome obstacles that will come up. They can give you advice and help you grow.
- I love keeping up with the latest work of other stylists. There's always so much talent to be inspired by. But, remember never be afraid to take risks and remain authentic to your unique style. By staying true to yourself, you can cultivate your unique talents and bring fresh perspectives to the industry.
