What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am in the art business, selling my own original paintings. My customers are people who especially love the arbutus tree and ocean art.
Tell us about yourself
Painting feels like an extension of who I have always been created to be. My creativity is greatly inspired by searching for and finding hidden coastal places on the Sunshine Coast, B.C. Canada and then painting them. Being in the beautiful outdoors is so refreshing, and sharing the scenes on canvas is amazingly therapeutic. I love when the circle is completed when an art client falls in love with a piece of art that I have created.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have been in multiple solo art shows and sold dozens of original paintings and hundreds of prints of my work. But my best accomplishment is creating a small "roadside" art gallery filled with my original paintings where many people are drawn to enjoy and purchase them.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things about being in the art business is marketing my own work and talking about myself too much.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The top 3 tips I would give to anyone looking to start, run and grow an art business are:
- Find and spend time with mentors who are also in a creative business and are a few steps ahead of you.
- Only work with gallery and store owners that you connect with and enjoy being around because if you enjoy them, chances are the people who love your art will enjoy them too.
- If you love what you do and many confirm you are good at it, don't give up; it's not an easy go.
