What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm an artist, and I create abstract paintings using acrylic paint on canvas. My Customers range from interior designers, art lovers, and collectors as well as corporate firms.
Tell us about yourself
I started pursuing an art career as I was finishing up university. I promised my profession that even though I was graduating in a different field, I would continue to pursue my passion. I was determined to make it as an artist, never once thought I should stop and just be content with my current employment. The thoughts that I kept at the forefront were what steps do I need to take to achieve my goal. I researched those steps, and one by one; I achieved them.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment so far was building up my brand large enough that I was able to become a full-time painter. Also, I was commissioned to paint an 18x13 foot painting for a condo lobby in downtown Toronto, Ontario.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Working longer hours than a regular 9-5 and getting used to not having a regular paycheck every two weeks. Learning never stops when you are self-employed. You have to keep moving things forward and trying new things to keep things fresh, fun, and interesting.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do your research and know your market.
- Keep your full-time employment until you are making comparables in your art career for at least two years.
- Keep it fun, and make sure to carve out time for yourself.
