Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Loma Risper, Founder of Loma BAMM (Business and Money Management), located in Dallas, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I've built an online course library for women solopreneurs/entrepreneurs aged 24-45 to learn various business and money management skills needed to start and support their businesses. The courses cover how to file various taxes, build a business and personal credit, web designing, build an e-commerce business, budgeting, and much more. The library of courses continues to grow to best support the evolving business needs of today's entrepreneurs.

Tell us about yourself

I originally started by helping my entrepreneurial husband almost 27 years ago with all the business tasks he needed to support his business. Eventually, people started to notice how valuable my "assistance" to my husband's business was, and they started asking me to assist them in their businesses. Over the years, I learned the skills to do the things that each business needed and kept building on those skills, which also built up my client list... to capacity. I've been serving small businesses and entrepreneurs with a variety of accounting, business, and administrative services over the years.

I eventually realized that for me to help the most amount of entrepreneurs, I would need to learn how to "duplicate" myself so that an unlimited number of people could access my skills. That led me to create online business courses for entrepreneurs. I figured that those entrepreneurs who are too busy could have their employees or assistants take the course to learn the skills needed to support their businesses.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my greatest accomplishment has been providing my clients with the much-needed business services that helped them achieve great success in their own businesses. I also take great pride in the business skills I taught so many budding entrepreneurs as their business mentors.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is having the discipline to consistently be everything to your business because you are the only one on the team. When you start out as a solopreneur, you have to be the talent, the manager, the salesperson, the secretary, the web designer, the marketing team, the accountant, and everything else your business needs. Telling yourself what to do and making yourself do it because no one else will be as invested in your success as you are before you see real results is the most challenging thing I think a business owner must go through.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Going to sleep early will allow you to wake up early so you can give 100% focus on completing business tasks before the world starts demanding your attention. I've found it to be the best way to get at least a solid 5 hours of uninterrupted intentional work done.
  2. No matter how big your business goals are, you can get there by putting one foot in front of the other. This helps me push past the intimidations of how much work still has to be done, as well as the fear of not being able to reach my big goals. Every minute is a "NEW" minute, so don't feel like 'it's too late' because you can course correct in an instant. You just have to make a choice.
  3. Perfection is an illusion, and there's not just one way to do something. Don't get stuck in your head...Learn by actually physically doing.
