Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Loise Perruchoud, founder of NeuroMotion Wellness, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At NeuroMotion Wellness, helping people feel better both physically and mentally using exercise is our motto. Our bodies are made to move even though our brains usually tell us not to.

My customers are people with chronic physical conditions, including low back pain, sciatica, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure, as well as cancer and stroke survivors. I also help individuals who are scared to exercise, do not like it, or are uncomfortable in a crowded gym, particularly older adults or individuals who suffer from hypersensitivity to sounds and light which often occurs in autism.

Tell us about yourself

In my late 20s, I suffered a shoulder injury which prevented me from doing a lot of the activities I used to do at the time. I was also in the middle of doing a doctorate degree which was very stressful. To improve my condition and my mental state, and with the help of a chiropractor, I started exercising and moving daily and realized how much exercise was helping me not only reduce my shoulder pain but also improve my focus and help me clear my head. After realizing the power of exercise on myself, I wanted to share what I had learned with others. I decided to get my diploma in health and fitness promotion and got a job as a personal trainer. This allowed me to start making an impact in my clients’ lives right away.

With the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, some of my clients wanted to keep training with me, so we decided to switch to online training. The gym I worked at didn’t offer online training at the time, so I committed to growing NeuroMotion Wellness and, despite the hard times, was able to give my clients what they wanted. After two years of online training at home, I still can’t believe how far my clients have gotten. Their strength and cardiovascular endurance have improved, and they are loving the convenience of online training. And so do I!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Deciding to start NeuroMotion Wellness and offer classes and personal training sessions online. I had the idea in my head for over four years before I decided to take the leap and start the business. And a year into it, the pandemic hit. I had to adapt and start offering online options, which was very hard at first but ended up being very rewarding eventually as both myself and my clients now enjoy the benefits of online training.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It is all on your shoulders. If you don’t do the work, no one will do it for you. If you make a mistake, you are the only one responsible and the only one who has the power to fix it. If you are not motivated, it is very difficult to get anywhere or do anything.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be motivated, know your purpose, and believe in what you are doing.
  2. Make a business plan that makes sense before you start (get help if you have to).
  3. Keep pushing forward but don’t forget to take a bit of time for yourself sometimes.
