Literacy Problem-solver - Lois Letchford
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lois Letchford, an educator, speaker, and author based in Green Island, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is private tutoring for students who struggle and have been left behind in reading and writing. My students are often labeled “dyslexic, speech-language impaired, autistic, or learning disabled.” My customers are parents of such children.
Tell us about yourself
Growing up, I was an undiagnosed dyslexic child, and I am the parent whose child was given a number of labels – autistic, learning disabled, and dyslexic. My son failed first grade. His prognosis was dire as he was labeled “the worst child ever.” He was seven years old. Taking on my son and his learning was transformative! I watched this “failure” turn into learning success. My son defied all odds and earned his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics. His early learning success propelled me to become a literacy specialist, teaching children just like him. I’ve spent 25 years teaching “vulnerable” students in the school setting, and now I’m in a position to work privately with individuals.
My personal struggles throughout my life help me to engage with students on another level. I offer specialized tutoring, adapting the teaching to meet the needs of my students. I charge for the hours I spend with the student and not the hours I spend in preparation.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is to have my business up and running! Gaining students who now read and write effectively!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I am responsible for all aspects of the business – teaching, marketing, blogging, and outreach. Work is continuous, and I have to make time for the work I don’t like to do (writing) as much as I love teaching.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Stick at it.
- Connect with other people in your business.
- Learn from the mistake of others.
