Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cindi Lockhart, Owner of Lockhart Wellness Solutions, LLC., located in East Bethel, MN, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a functional and integrative nutritionist (dietitian) with over 30 years of clinical experience. My clients are primarily women looking to optimize their health, weight, and day-to-day function. I take a root cause approach, digging below the surface with comprehensive functional lab tests to find the answers and then personalize a phased approach involving nutrition and lifestyle habits (activity/exercise, sleep, stress management, environmental exposures). My clients have exhausted all other avenues (doctors, clinics, nutritionists) without results. They are ready to invest in themselves and put in the work to optimize their long-term health and wellness.
Tell us about yourself
I am an entrepreneur by trade. During my 30 years of working in my profession, I have always had some element of entrepreneurship - my sole business or a side gig. I am extremely passionate about what I do and my desire to help others. I personally come from poor genetics with a strong motivation to prevent my own genes from expressing through how I live my life (the good news is that genetics plays only a 25-30% role, with lifestyle playing the rest!) and want to empower others to do the same. My daily motivation is improving my client's function and health - getting a message from a client that they 'finally' have energy, no more pain, can sleep, their gut has calmed down or lost that stubborn weight is what brings me to work each day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Growing my business year over year through 1:1 clients, group programs, and delivering continuing education courses to other professionals. I'm always adding something new to meet my client's needs.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Work/life balance - LOL! Loving what I do sometimes clouds my overall life. I am always working, creating, reading/researching, etc. It's hard to separate my professional life from my personal life, especially when working virtually from home. I have, however, created some schedule barriers - a block in the morning to walk my dogs and workout, an hour block for lunch and a mental break, plus no weekends. This has been game-changing!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start networking. You need supporters of your work for referrals into your business.
- Establish strong work/life barriers right up front.
- Start simple and grow as your business model and clientele grow. Don't out-price yourself.
