Healthy Happy People - Local Health Integrative Clinic

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Robyn Land, CEO of Local Health Integrative Clinic, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the owner of Local Health Integrative Clinic, which is the largest integrative healthcare clinic in Vancouver, BC. We offer naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, massage therapy, clinical counseling, reiki, hypnotherapy, and much more. We also have a large yoga studio where we offer drop-in yoga, workshops, retreats, and more. With a team of over 25 healthcare practitioners, we offer healthcare to all ages and health concerns.

Tell us about yourself

I have been an entrepreneur ever since I was 16 years old when someone offered me the opportunity to take over their small graphic design business. Many different paths lead me to become a naturopathic doctor. Throughout medical school, I knew I would open my own clinic as I love to work as a part of a team and help empower people to grow and thrive in the areas of life they are passionate about.

For me, a connection has always been a leading value. My work as a physician allows me to connect, advocate and really help people's health and wellness. When I put on my "business hat," I connect with my team and the community at large.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is opening our new location. It took 18 months of waiting for city permits to come through, so lots of patience and persistence. Our formal location was just 875sq ft, so the jump to this 6000sq ft, making us the biggest integrative clinic in Vancouver, BC is something I am very proud of.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Switching hats between business and personal. I find it challenging not to take it personally when someone leaves our practice (luckily, it doesn't happen often) or when there are any kinds of negotiations going on. I'm learning to get comfortable with the discomfort of this, but it is an ongoing process.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find the geographical area that you love and where "your people are." If you love your setting, you will thrive.
  2. It is hard for one person to be good at every aspect of the business. Learn all of it, and then delegate out what you don't love doing.
  3. I believe the best entrepreneurs can get to a point where they feel like there are roadblocks or challenges and use those as an opportunity to dig in and get creative rather than give up.
