Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dustin Peltier, owner of Loaf and Honey, located in Winnipeg, MB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an artisanal cheese company carrying on the Tradition of Trappist cheese making in Manitoba. We also are a catering company focusing on supporting our local producers and designing menus to create special events for our clients. Our customers are lovers of local food and great experiences. And if cheese excites you, we are here just for you.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in the food industry for over 20 years and am passionate about creating memories through food. Food inspires conversations and togetherness, and I feel privileged to help create these experiences for others. For our cheese, it has been an honor to carry on the tradition of the Trappist cheese that has been made in Manitoba for over 100 years.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to keep going and pivoting during so many unforeseen obstacles. As a new independent cheese company in Manitoba, we ran into so many issues that we just could not have thought of as there was no one else who had started a new cheese business here in 70 plus years. So being able to navigate, adjust, and keep going despite many setbacks has been both extremally draining and rewarding in that we can still be here despite all that we have gone through.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Always having to adjust. Especially the last two years, the constant making and changing plans. Readjusting to ever-changing situations.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Do research on what you are doing and where you want to go. Invest in yourself and your team. No matter how dedicated you are to your success, you need a strong team beside you. Figure out when the right times are to stick to your guns and the right time to adjust. These will be different for every situation. So that is the toughest part.
