Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Liz Borom, Owner of @Lizbdance, located in Asheville, NC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a freelance dance educator and choreographer. I work with dance studios, pre-professional and professional, all across the country. I teach Master Classes in contemporary, jazz, lyrical, and musical theater and set pieces for dancers for competitions and performances.
Tell us about yourself
I grew up dancing and knew that was what I wanted to do. I professionally danced for years, then developed a passion for teaching techniques and for creating my own pieces. I started teaching for dance conventions across the country and love connecting with dancers from all over that share the same passion. I am beyond grateful to have turned my passion into my career, and I am so lucky that I get to dance every day. That is my motivation.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
For a long time, I had to supplement my dance career with other full-time jobs. The day I realized that my dance career was too full to keep the other jobs was huge for me. For the first time, I was able to just dance and not take on random jobs to make ends meet. Another accomplishment was this summer when my friend Abba and I produced and choreographed a full-length professional contemporary show called Moments in the Atlanta area. We auditioned and hired 9 professional dancers and created a full-length show. It was a bucket list item for me and was super awesome to get to do.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
There are no guarantees. I have spent years going to the same studios then one year they don't book you for various reasons. It's a fickle industry and very competitive. It's hard to constantly have to put yourself out there to make sure you are staying relevant, and sometimes mentally challenging to not get discouraged.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Connections are everything.
- Work hard and keep your focus on your goals.
- Stay positive.
