Bring Your Vision to Life - Liz Talago Content Strategy
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Liz Talago, Founder of Liz Talago Content Strategy, located in Ann Arbor, MI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm an independent content strategist, writer, and consultant specializing in mental and behavioral health tech. I also help unlikely executives and feminist entrepreneurs develop authentic personal brands.
Tell us about yourself
Picture it: What would happen if we democratized access to the knowledge and tools that enhance well-being and save lives? After spending years on the front lines of mental healthcare, I built my business to answer that exact question. I'm on a mission to leverage clinical expertise, behavioral science, and strategic storytelling to eliminate barriers to life-changing care.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I believe that accessible, inclusive mental health care is a human right. So when I founded my business, I made a commitment to collaborate with other folks who feel the same way, with no exceptions. Today I'm proud to say I built a values-first business that allows me to collaborate with brilliant changemakers who aren't interested in simply digitizing the status quo. Rather, they're reimagining the face of mental health care across the globe, and I'm honored to work alongside them.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Initially, I struggled with rejection and hearing "no" or being seen as too expensive. It's hard not to take that personally when you first start out. But I've learned to embrace that I'm not for everyone, which is a good thing. And if you're not getting the occasional rejection, you need to raise your prices.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Show up as yourself, and don't apologize for it. If you being you is a deterrent, you probably don't want to work with that person anyway.
- Set strict boundaries and make them explicit. Schedule your business around your life (and not the other way around), and keep your appointments with yourself.
- Pivot small and often. If you're doing things right, your business won't look the same a year from now. Avoid holding onto things that aren't working just because of sunk costs.
