Capturing Your Story through the Lens - Liz Putnam
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Liz Putnam, owner of Liz Putnam Photography, located in Cheyenne, WY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Wyoming-based family and newborn photographer. My clients are looking for a photographer who will not only take beautiful, professional images but also provide a welcoming and enjoyable session experience, especially for those family members who might be a little unsure about having their photo taken. I love finding out a family's story almost as much as I enjoy taking their photo, and I do my absolute best to make it a client-centered experience.
Tell us about yourself
I took the leap of faith to start my business in 2015, hoping to make a bit of money on the side while still being able to care for our three small kids. As our kids have gotten older, started school, and become more independent, I've been able to grow my business and turn it from a side gig to a full-time (and then some) job. I love, love, LOVE owning my own business - while I don't love all the tasks involved, it's a new adventure every single day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Creating a business that could support my family from scratch. I always thought this would be a temporary career to get me through a couple of busy years, and now I'm quickly approaching ten years!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Not letting the business overtake my life and making time for my family. Family sessions tend to be scheduled on weekends and evenings, and it's been a struggle to find the balance between profit and having uninterrupted time with my husband and kids.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Boundaries. Learn to set boundaries with yourself, your family, and, most importantly, your customer, especially when working from home.
- CRM software. My life changed drastically for the better when I started using CRM software that kept track of contracts, invoices, and client contact info. I am able to save the contract, invoice, and email templates, and clients are able to pay their invoices and sign their contracts online. I save massive amounts of time, both for myself and my clients!
- Accountant. My one regret is not talking to a local accountant in my first year. It would have saved me a lot of stress and lost sleep to talk to someone!
