Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sachi Maclachlan, owner of Little Vessels Donut Co., located in Honolulu, HI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Little Vessels Donut Co. is a plant-based yeasted, donut shop. We make and sell donuts to all donut lovers, vegans, and non-vegans alike! We started out during the early days of COVID as a pop-up and have now moved into a bigger space. Our dream is to own a brick-and-mortar shop one day.

Tell us about yourself

I worked in the film industry for nearly ten years in New York City before moving to Honolulu. A year after my move, COVID hit, and I began reevaluating what I found important, what I wanted to do, and what I had always dreamed of. I wanted to own my own business, and I wanted to make vegan treats. Thanks to the gift of time that the pandemic had given me, I began to work. I experimented with recipes, built a social media following, and found an outlet to sell my products. Over a year and a half later, Little Vessels Donut Co. is still moving and shaking. It's been wild to see the ways in which the company has grown over time.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Currently, my biggest accomplishment has been building and training a team. In the beginning, it was just me, and then my husband joined. Now I have three team members who keep Little Vessels moving. I am so lucky to have such a cohesive and strong crew.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Doing everything! Being in charge of every aspect of the business can be tiring and difficult, but it is not impossible!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Focus. Keep your eye on the prize. I did this by writing a pretty extensive business plan with easy goals as well as five and ten-year plans.
  2. Don't be afraid to ask questions. If there was something I didn't know, I found someone who did. Ask away!
  3. Don't give up. Some days are harder than others, and it's easy to feel defeated when things don't go according to plan. Just remember why you started and why you love it!
