What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm the founder and chief strategy lead at Little Kernel Communications. My customers are people who have brands and businesses that they have developed and want to grow but need a little help to get their name and their mission. I help them get to their goals by providing advice and a plan on who they can reach, how they can do it (especially through social media content), and learning about everything else along the way. My other service is writing services—I shape thoughts and discussions into documents that get the message across in an enriching, clear, and engaging way.

Tell us about yourself

I started LKC because it just made sense. I was getting more and more requests to help people figure out social media content strategy and more requests to write freelance for various publications, so starting a business was the best way to serve those needs while also getting to work on things I really like and want to learn more about.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Knowing your worth, sticking to it, and having clients that recognize and respect it. It's also quite nice when people recognize you as a leader in your field and come to you for advice (and sometimes encouragement!)

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Doing the business side of things, especially as a sole proprietor. It's not easy being the strategist and writer, then having to handle the unglamorous side of business operations like accounting, advertising, partnerships, etc. But that doesn't mean you can't do it, sometimes, you need help to get back to doing what you love.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know why you're starting the business in the first place.
  2. Know your worth. (but make sure you research it first!)
  3. The path to success is not linear. You'll learn things as you go along; being adaptable and teachable is the way to weather the changes.
