Helping Moms Make Time for a Business - Lisa Tanner Writing

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in freelancing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lisa Tanner, Founder of Lisa Tanner Writing, located in Silva, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a freelance writer and virtual assistant who helps busy parents make time for a stay-at-home business. I love helping overwhelmed moms calm the chaos, free up their brainpower, and get stuff done!

Tell us about yourself

After my fifth child was born, my husband and I realized something had to change. We would spend more on daycare costs than I brought home from teaching, and I knew that wasn't sustainable. So I left the classroom and stayed home.

But as our family grew, finances got tighter. I started exploring my options to see what I could do from home. I stumbled across freelance writing and got hooked. Then as my business grew, I found new ways to branch out and create more income streams.

My family is my biggest why. They motivate me to keep going - I love spending time with my 11 kids. And honestly, homeschooling plus a work-from-home business created a really flexible lifestyle that we all appreciate!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I love coaching other moms and helping them work through their struggles so they can move forward. Seeing their success is one of the best things for me, and I truly enjoy it! To help even more moms succeed, I created a course called Balancing Diapers and Deadlines. It unpacks all of my top time management strategies to help people make simple changes that open up more bandwidth in their lives.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Sorting through the noise that's out there and figuring out what actually works for you as a business owner. So many "experts," tell you that you're doomed to fail if you don't do x, y, or z. But if x, y, and z aren't a good fit for you or your audience, you're just wasting your time doing them. So don't get distracted by shiny objects and "expert" voices, but stay true to yourself and your vision and values.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You'll never develop a perfect business plan and have enough knowledge to feel ready to begin. Start anyways. Own that you'll make mistakes and pivot along the way. But take that first step, or you never will.
  2. Believe in yourself. If you don't, no one else will. Your mindset is huge, so spend time working on it.
  3. Kids aren't an excuse not to create your own business. Be honest with yourself for a minute... if you didn't have kids, you'd come up with a different excuse. If you really want something, stop with the excuses already and take action. You can create a business model that works with your life - kids and all!
