Specializes in Branding and Headshots - Lisa Kay Photography
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lisa Kay, Owner of Lisa Kay Photography, located in Chicago, IL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the owner of Lisa Kay Photography, a headshot, branding, and lifestyle photography studio in Chicago, IL. I help camera-shy entrepreneurs look good online through stunning headshots and branding images.
Tell us about yourself
You read a lot of photographers' bios, and it reads, "I came out of the womb with a camera in my hand"....that was not me. I have always been a creative soul and felt most alive in art class growing up. I also believed that I could never make a living being an artist. Years into a corporate career, I was laid off and decided to find something I actually enjoyed. I took a photography 101 class and became absolutely obsessed with learning more. I started taking classes, watching YouTube tutorials, and taking photos of everyone and everything I could. I built my business from the ground up, and some days I still pinch myself that I get to make a living being an artist. This is why I am so passionate about helping other entrepreneurs grow their brands and online presence with standout headshots and branding images.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The first year I made 6 figures with my own business. That was a personal milestone that I was very proud to accomplish. I am so grateful to do something I love and make a good living at the same time.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Everyone dreams of owning their own business so they can be their own boss...but no one tells you the level of stress that comes with that. When your heart and soul are dedicated to making your business a success, it is on your mind constantly. Finding a work-life balance is a battle, but it is 1000% worth it.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Say "yes" to everything! When you first start out, don't go into it thinking you are too good for certain jobs; every single job will teach you something about where you want to go.
- Network with your community, not just online. Amazing opportunities have come to me from in-person networking groups and the other business owners I have met in my community.
- Be your own biggest fan. It's hard to put yourself out there, but if you never do, you will never know what you could be.
