What's your business, and who are your customers?

"Inspiring happiness through baking." My love for baking started from creating cakes for family celebrations that what has now evolved into a home-based baking business known as "Linzer Baking." Specializing in chocolate truffles, cookies, and cupcakes.

I create holiday themes and delicious desserts that cater to and celebrate any occasion - weddings - birthdays - corporate gifts. I am a solo baker
providing every customer order with good ingredients, heart, passion, and professionalism ensure that each bite makes you want more.

Tell us about yourself

Inspired by my children, my Linzer Baking Instagram account launched in 2014 and my business in May 2021. I am motivated by creativity, love for baking, being challenged, and hearing my customers tell me how great my products taste. I am a former healthcare leader who retired at the end of 2020. The timing and opportunity for a home-based business landed for me, so I capitalized on this adventure. It feels as though I have the best of both worlds - retirement with a business that I love. I also am very emotional about my heritage. My parents - Bill and Eva Linzer - immigrated to Canada to have a better life. My mother was a phenomenal baker, and my father had his own cabinet-making business for extra income - I feel that I have a blend of both of them in me!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

That's difficult to answer. Initially, it was to pull the trigger and actually launch the business. Another accomplishment is just doing the "firsts" - first large order, first Farmer's market group, first business design, and marketing, etc. I also feel accomplished when my business attracts new customers - word of mouth (and taste) - which goes a long way in building your business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Ensuring that you are up-to-date maintaining trends. Reaching different markets via social media platforms. As a Gen "X," I grew up with minimal technology, and learning how to reach a new market via these platforms is my challenge and opportunity as well.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ensure you have your vision, mission, and plan for business clearly in your mind. Be creative with your thoughts - write them down, leave them, and then come back at a later time.
  2. Once you have your vision, stick to it and keep it within reasonable goal posts. Don't try to be all things to all people - focus on what you do well and DO IT!
  3. It's okay to say no if it's not in your wheelhouse or expertise. Do not be afraid to refer and be honest.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I never thought I would have my own small baking business, so for me, I am grateful for the opportunity to do something that I love and inspires happiness in individuals!
