Language and Cultural E-Learning For Kids - Lingo Plaza

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lily Hagen, Founder and Owner of Lingo Plaza, located in Marietta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Lingo Plaza is language and cultural education for families around the world. It’s where families wanting to cultivate a love for Spanish and Hispanic culture in their children can connect, grow, and find resources and support to effectively navigate multilingual and multicultural parenting.

Tell us about yourself

The concept of Lingo Plaza originated from a pain point that my family faced, and that was the lack of access to language and cultural education in early childhood. As a bicultural family, we face many challenges. Although language is part of it, some of them are related to culture and identity. We are committed to supporting our families in a holistic approach, so our children can foster healthy social-emotional skills. Our mission as a company is simple - to provide high-quality education to millions of families around the world regardless of their background and social status and to break down linguistic and cultural barriers.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Hearing how our families have been impacted and how it has not only helped their children learn the language and connect with culture but also helped them navigate their multilingual and multicultural parenting journey, is one of my most fulfilling accomplishments. I am a parent walking this journey, so I get it.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Starting a business comes with ups and downs, and every journey looks different for everyone. I believe that some of the biggest challenges are staying persistent, focused, and having realistic expectations. Business owners have to be really self-aware. This is crucial when you have to accept that something might not work and you have to iterate or pivot quickly. You gotta learn to fall in love with the pain of your customers over your product. Once I learned that it helped me see things through a different lens.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don’t wait until you’re ready. You’ll always face uncertainties.
  2. Do your homework! Starting a business is easy, but running a business that doesn’t have a market fit will fail. Do your research, and make sure there’s a demand.
  3. Fall in love with the pain you are solving and not the product. By doing this, you’ll learn to iterate and pivot when necessary.
