Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lindsay Burgess, Founder of Luminocity Consulting, located in Jersey City, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a course and group coaching program called Consistent Clients on Instagram (CCI). I help coaches, and consultants get clear on their messaging, create captivating content quickly & magnetically attract dream clients. From therapists, mindset coaches, and grief educators to vocal, fitness, health, and social media coaches, I work with a variety of people who want to upgrade their brand and attract their ideal clients through customized inbound and outbound marketing strategies that work for their specific business.

Tell us about yourself

I worked in marketing for more than 5 years and then sales for two and a half years, but during the pandemic, I was stuck on unemployment and applied to over 40 positions with no luck. After my licensed psychotherapist recommended that I start my business on Instagram, that's how I hired her... she posted content that I felt connected with, so I knew I had to hire her, so I did the same thing. I applied the knowledge I used from working with personal brands, small and large businesses when I was in corporate, and wow! I have helped so many people to run profitable businesses, so they can be passionate about the work that they do. My clients motivate me. I want to help as many entrepreneurs as possible to attract clients and make money online while doing what they love without burnout.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Aside from seeing so many successful clients, my biggest accomplishment is getting paid to train marketing teams and paid guest speaker opportunities for other coaching programs. Because of the revenue my business has generated in almost two years. I plan to travel the world and become a digital nomad. That's the beauty of working from anywhere!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is focusing on one task at a time. So often, I am wired to multi-task because there's always so much to do. One lesson that I wish I had learned earlier was completing one task at a time because that's the most productive approach in the long run.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Always be yourself. You never want to show up in a way that isn't true or genuine to yourself. If something feels weird or uncomfortable, don't create content that makes you feel like an imposter. Simply show up as YOU, and people will appreciate it. This way, you can attract your tribe.
  2. Connect with other entrepreneurs. Having a community is what will motivate you, and I've gotten so many referrals online just from being a social butterfly. Human connection is still the best way to sell, even if that's virtually.
  3. Don't only post educational content on social media. People want to learn valuable information that cannot be Googled. Your story, insight, and experiences cannot be replicated, so share those. That's also valuable content for your business.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Another piece of advice that I would give business owners is to set boundaries when they work. If you work 5 hours a day, Monday - Friday, stop working. Go watch Netflix, read a book, listen to music, and go out with your significant other or with friends... don't be attached at the hip to your business. Lastly, focus on revenue-generating tasks. Don't spend all your time on social media or doing things that aren't raising your income.
