Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lindsay Angelo, Growth Strategist, Thought Leader, Advisor & TEDx Speaker, located in Seattle, WA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I have a strategy and futures consultancy that delivers three services: 1) strategy consulting, helping purpose-drive brands craft their strategic plans and growth playbooks, 2) strategy training, helping organizations and individuals become better strategic thinkers through courses and learning content; and 3) thought leadership and keynotes on the future of consumerism and impact-driven strategy.
My customers are purpose-driven brands and organizations looking to grow their revenues while also amplifying their impact. This includes CEOs, VPs, Directors, Managers, and Founders from a variety of industries - retail, health and wellness, consumer goods, technology, and more. Over the past six years, I've worked with organizations including lululemon, the LEGO Group, Unilever, Snapchat, Goodman Brand, Permira Private Equity, and more.
Tell us about yourself
I started my consulting practice six years ago when I branched out from my full-time job working in corporate strategy for the yoga wear company lululemon. I discovered my entrepreneurial roots as a teenager, but as I progressed in my career, I ended up working for a variety of brands, both big and small. Years later, armed with deep experience in Strategy, I felt called to return to those entrepreneurial roots. Over the past six years, I've worked with over 150 clients, including fortune 500 brands, private equity funds, and a host of early-stage companies.
What motivates me is the idea of solving some of the world's biggest challenges through business. Business is one of the greatest change agents that exists, but its superpowers are grossly under-utilized. What if a business could heal the world? What lights me up every day is the opportunity to help businesses craft strategies that drive growth but do it through creating a positive impact that helps people and the planet self-actualize. I call this building a self-actualization economy - and think it's very much within our grasp.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Delivering a TEDx talk on the self-actualization economy. Being on the TED stage was a long-time goal come true!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Being comfortable with uncertainty and learning to let go. Each day brings something unique – sometimes you can see around the corner, sometimes you can't. That is one of the best parts of entrepreneurship and can also be the hardest. I think most entrepreneurs, by their very nature, like to be in control.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be dogged – it's the small, consistent things over time that will lead to success.
- Build your digital marketing savvy early – in today's day and age; it's a must.
- Build community – entrepreneurship can feel isolating at first. Leaning on friends, family, peers, or even co-work spaces helps!
