Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stacey Miller, founder of Lilyfire Photography, located in Calgary, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

LilyFire Photography. It's the name I've chosen for the passion I have. People ask me what I like to shoot and my answer is usually something along the lines of “what do you love?” because that’s it. That’s what I love to photograph: the people you love, the products you pour your heart into and the events you want to remember. Your family, the things you create, the events you plan, your business, and your dreams all matter. The things that set your heart on fire matter and it’s a privilege for me to capture them all in photo form for you.

I specialize in lifestyle and branding sessions and am always open to collaborating with you on a session. The things that matter to you, matter to me.

Tell us about yourself

Lilyfire has evolved over time. Initially, photography was a hobby for me, as is the case with many photographers. Through several other jobs - marketing, event management, recruitment - I had the opportunity to bring my photography into my work and hone my skills. Family and friends started to utilize my skills to capture their moments and I started to realize just how important having those moments frozen in time truly is. In 2017, I officially started LilyFire Photography and, after the birth of my third child, made it my focus, leaving my "day" job.

It truly is a privilege to do what I do.

Having my own kids - I have three - I'm constantly reminded how fast they grow and how precious the time with them is. I've always known that photos matter but having my own family has made it even more critical to me to capture the things you love well.

When you look at your gallery of photos, I want you to feel valued. I want you to see that you and the people (or things) you love matter. I want you to be proud of the images we captured because they represent you. If we capture your business, I want you to be able to trust that the photos will showcase your product in a way that makes people see it in the best light possible. Life is short, let's treasure it.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to grow a business during the pandemic has felt like a big win. I'm deeply grateful to be able to help support my family and to see actual growth in that, even in a difficult season.

On a more heart level, every time I get a message from a client who is thrilled with their photos, I know I've done my job well. It's especially close to my heart when I know the client was reluctant, nervous or, like myself, doesn't like being in front of the camera.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a small business owner, we do everything. It's not just being a photographer and taking photos. There's everything behind the scenes too; administration, book keeping, client management, social media and marketing and loads of editing. It's a fine balance to manage it all and still stay creative and in love with the actual work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

1. Don't go it alone. Find a group of like minded people (not necessarily from the same field but of similar mindset) to network with. Cheer each other on, brainstorm together and bounce ideas off each other.

2. Comparison is killer. Don't do it. Instead, look at those around you to be inspired and to see how far you've come.

3. Never stop growing and learning. Keep honing your skills and finding new ones. Challenge your creativity and your knowledge. You and your clients will be better for it.
