What's your business, and who are your customers?
I provide individual and couples telehealth therapy to those residing in California, Texas, and Florida. I work with adult individuals who are experiencing anxiety, depression, and/or complex trauma. I also work with couples who are experiencing relationship challenges, want to strengthen their communication, and ultimately feel secure in their partnership.
Tell us about yourself
I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist who is also Certified in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). My desire to help and guide others through psychotherapy stemmed from my own life experiences and challenges. During this time, I attended therapy weekly. It was a safe environment in which I could be honest about my fears, hopes, desires, and dreams with someone who was present in a non-judgmental and empathic way. During this time, my therapist challenged me and helped me identify patterns that were interfering with my growth. My strong belief in the power of therapy motivates me each day to help others!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment has been figuring out what my niche is in order to properly market myself and deepen my work with others.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
There is no certainty when working in private practice. One month you have an influx of clients, and the next, half of the people on your schedule are canceled. Do not let this discourage you! It just means you have to prepare financially for the slower month(s). It is also a great opportunity to deepen your knowledge of the work through attending trainings and workshops and perhaps focusing on ways to improve as a clinician.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Believe in yourself. This may sound like "a cliche," but it is true. I know that I cannot help every single person, and my approach is not for all, but I also know that I can help others through my experience and background.
- Know what your niche is and who your ideal client is. In the beginning, lots of clinicians take on clients because they are desperate, but they might not be a good fit. If you are clear on the population you work with, this will guide you to your ideal client faster than you know!
- Do not be afraid to market yourself. Lots of therapists have this belief that clients will "find" them without creating a website or connecting with other clinicians. This is false! You have to invest in marketing and make a point to be seen. Some clinicians do this through social media, maintaining profiles on psychology websites, starting a youtube channel, or creating a website. Find what works for you, and your ideal client will find you!
