Key Elements of Your Own Story - Lightbeamers

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with April Pertuis, CEO of Lightbeamers, located in New Braunfels, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the CEO of storytelling and visibility consulting & coaching company. I help women leaders and business owners amplify their voices by learning how to magnetically tell their story. My motto is: when women share their stories, they shine a light on others. I primarily focus on helping women become authors and speakers.

Tell us about yourself

I've been in the world of storytelling my entire career (30+ years). I started out as a journalist and video producer for high-end television (CBS News, HGTV, DIY Network) and eventually got to the top of my game and wondered, "Is this all there is?" I wanted MORE people to understand the value of their story, not just the ones I was getting hired to feature. So I took my message and my business online and began using social media to reach more people, specifically women.

I firmly believe when women begin to honor their value and worth, they will take up more space in the world -- meaning they will have seats at the table in politics, leadership organizations, churches, families, businesses, and so much more! I'm on a mission to build better women leaders. I believe the key is hiding in their story.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The REAL answer is the honor and privilege of witnessing other women's stories. From a tactical standpoint, we've published two collaborative books (Amazon best-seller) featuring 19 women's voices. We have a top-rated podcast and a very engaged community of over 2500 women. These are all incredible feats I'm very proud of and have worked hard to achieve. So much goes on behind the scenes to have accomplishments like this. I like playing "the long game."

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The highs are great, and the lows are pretty low. Sometimes it's extremely lonely, and I feel isolated sometimes. You have to play a game of RISK to be a business owner, and sometimes it's scary to take risks, but you have to do it anyway. It's so hard.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire help before you think you are ready or can afford it. Outsource as fast as you can!!!! This includes hiring coaches who can really help you get out of your own way.
  2. Trust yourself. You already know most of what you need to know. For the rest, Google, YouTube, and Free Facebook groups are incredible resources, but you have to use them!!
  3. Take action daily. Staying stuck will get you absolutely nowhere.
