Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in videography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Christina Monai, Owner of LifeSong Films Inc., located in St. Albert, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a videographer, and I film and edit many different kinds of videos for businesses and organizations. This ranges from seminars and presentations, compiling video archives for training and orientation, and creating spotlight videos to showcase employees and volunteers, services and products, and the history of the company/organization. It's also important to show how each business and organization serves its client base and how they're part of the fabric of the community.

Tell us about yourself

Being a visual storyteller means I have the drive to help others tell their stories. Whether it's the story of a hardworking construction crew, an incredible product that's going to help ease the lives of customers, or the heartfelt story of a non-profit making a difference in the world, all these stories resonate, and I feel honoured to help share these stories.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment thus far has been paying myself a living wage for the first time after two years in business. It was a goal I set for myself at the beginning of this year, and I'm so proud that I crushed it!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a business owner means wearing multiple hats, sometimes all at once. Remember to schedule time for yourself to rest and recharge, and then you're better able to handle things when the tsunami of client work hits and you're switching hats faster than you can keep up with.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Network, network, network! And when I say network, I mean hold off on selling yourself and focus on building relationships. Those will serve you way better than any sales pitch!
  2. Identify areas where you're not as knowledgeable and hire a team who can handle that for you. For me, hiring an accountant was one of the best additions to my team and took a ton of stress off.
  3. Remind yourself daily why you're following your passion. Some days will be tougher than others, and it's important to revisit your why for starting a business in the first place. Never give up!
