Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tammy Goen, Founder of Lifescape Wellness, located in Bend, OR, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a holistic life coach and energy practitioner, helping highly sensitive people move from surviving to thriving by creating a toolbox of techniques for reducing overwhelm and developing self-compassion and self-love. Many clients already know they're highly sensitive and feel overwhelmed or stuck, and some don't realize until we get started, this always creates such a powerful 'aha!'
Tell us about yourself
After helping trauma survivors as a licensed counselor and reaching burnout, I moved on to helping through massage and energy work. When I began to miss the emotional aspect of the work and moved into coaching, I began to recognize that the majority of my clients were highly sensitive... something I'd only discovered about myself a few years prior. When I began to hear from clients that they could only progress so far in other coaching or counseling because they didn't feel understood, it became my mission to work with other highly sensitives to learn more about themselves and overcome obstacles, mostly mindset and begin to enjoy life through honoring themselves. I love the moment when my clients finally get that they're not only 'ok' but amazing and that they can use their tools to create a very positive future.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I've always been able to maintain a healthy balance of work and personal time. My business will always be there, but I need to take care of myself to make sure I'm 100% available during work time.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
As a solopreneur, it's definitely a challenge to know that it's all up to me... I make and am responsible for the decisions and rely upon only myself for my income and business growth. That's also a big benefit. I prefer having a flexible schedule and choosing what resonates with me at every step, rather than working for someone and having to abide by things that don't work for me. It does require trust in myself, which took time to cultivate.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be willing to stand up for your needs and make decisions that resonate... get rid of 'shoulds' from others. Everyone has their idea of the 'right' way to run a business, but it has to be your right way.
- Make sure to schedule your self-care time, no matter how much work you have to do (it will always be there). If you let this go, eventually, you will not be fully present or capable, and your business won't be what you want it to be.
- Decide what 'successful' means to you, besides a certain income, and focus on that rather than your bottom line.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
It's important to be kind to yourself and try to let go of expectations and the ugly 'shoulds.' Life's a journey that's supposed to be enjoyed along the way, not something to finally be experienced once you reach the finish line, lived only once a goal is accomplished. And reward yourself for the smallest achievements along the way.
