Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Brooke Stillwell, Co-Owner of Life after Kids, located in Southborough, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is an online brand, Life after Kids. Our customers are midlife women who are looking for meaning, purpose, and improved well-being now that their kids are growing up and leaving home.

Tell us about yourself

I've focused on women's health and wellness for over 20 years. Just over a year ago, my best friend, Lynne, and I decided to start a business together. We're in midlife, our kids are growing up, and we've been focusing on our health, wellness, and self-development, as well as our clients, since we first met in college. We decided we wanted to bring our experience and knowledge to other women in our phase of life to help them navigate their kids growing up and age vibrantly and naturally. I am motivated daily by the amazing women I serve and my three boys. They're my why. I want to model being a good mother but also a strong, successful businesswoman for them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is seeing a woman I've worked with transform their life and their health. That's a big deal, and it's why I do what I do. But the little things count to- the dm's or comments saying "thanks, I really needed this today" or "this really spoke to me" I'm so grateful to bring midlife women content that is meaningful to them in this phase of life. I love making connections and building a community for women to support each other in this season.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing by far is balancing being a mom and a business owner. My family is my top priority, but I also love what I do. My work completes me. So I have to be really productive when I'm working. But I also have to set boundaries and know when to shut it off. I'll say that I'm a work in progress in this area. My motto for the year is "work smarter, not harder."

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Set boundaries for yourself early on so you don't burn out. Working 24/7 can take a huge toll on your physical and emotional health.
  2. Always start with your "why" and if you haven't yet, read Simon Sinek's book.
  3. If something isn't working, don't be afraid to pivot. Sometimes what you think your customer wants doesn't line up with what they actually want. If you're flexible and willing to adapt, you'll save yourself time, energy, and likely money too!
