Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jean Lavigne, owner of Librairie Résonance, located in Montreal, QC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the owner of a bookstore entirely dedicated to music. My customers are, of course, people in the music industry, such as musicians and singers, but also everyone who loves music. In my bookstore, you will find not only popular biographies but also books relating to social issues, such as the place of women in the music business, creativity, and historical books in regards to music.
Tell us about yourself
My first job as a teenager was working in a record store, and I've always said it was my best job ever! Also, I've always dreamed of opening a bookstore. So when I lost my business due to the pandemic, it was time to accomplish my dream. Music+books = Bookstore dedicated to music!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment was opening my previous business (a small guesthouse) and living off of it for 13 years. When you consider that most businesses close after three years, I am very proud to have "made it."
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is the responsibility that weighs entirely on your shoulders. If it doesn't work, you can't blame anyone else. Sometimes having your own business becomes overwhelmingly consuming. It is hard to get away from it, physically and especially mentally. Make sure you have some people to help out. I couldn't have done it without my wife.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Trust yourself and your instincts.
- Do not listen to people who don't think it's a good idea unless it's the majority (then do listen to them).
- Location, Location, Location (if it's a brick and mortar) and Preparation, Preparation, Preparation because when it gets going, it's "Full-on."
