We Build Brands & Then Help Them Grow - Liberty Type

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Burg, founder, and CEO of Liberty Type, located in Knoxville, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Liberty Type is a creative and marketing agency based in Knoxville, Tennessee. We are an all-female team that works with small business owners to transform their online presence through copywriting, branding, website design, and marketing strategy. Our clients are successful entrepreneurs and service-based business owners who break the mold and want the way they show up online to reflect that.

Tell us about yourself

I have always loved messaging and design and how they work together. After college, I began my career as a journalist in Philadelphia. I worked for an online news organization for 6+ years, covering feature stories and breaking news before moving into their digital marketing space. I found that I loved how digital marketing blended messaging and positioning with layout and design. Before long, I found that I was spending most of my time designing ads and social media graphics, and I truly fell in love with the process. After teaching myself the Adobe suite as a new mom, I opened my own branding studio back in 2016. That studio has grown into an agency, and we've naturally added copywriting, website design, and marketing to our services. For me, owning a business that allowed me to 'have my own thing' and be creative was a saving grace as a new mom. I love working with other women and moms (or hiring them to be on our team) because I truly believe in the power of passionate women following their dreams.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In 2020, I was approached by Altar'd State and served on a nearly 12-month contract with them to help them build their new children's brand, Tullabee. That such a large company noticed me and my work and brought me on board to work on such a large project was a true 'pinch me' moment. I developed the vision and the assets for Tullabee's brand, website, marketing strategy, window displays, and even their store design. It was amazing to be a part of such a large, tangible project, and I'm super proud of my work with them.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For me, it's keeping the vision clear! The online world and entrepreneurship space are loud and noisy. It is easy to be misled or swayed by the opinions of gurus and those who have come before you. Taking time away from social media to get centered on my actual goals and vision for the agency has been challenging but so important as we grow. Just because it seems to be everyone's goal to grow their business as large as possible, or hit six or seven figures, doesn't mean that has to be your dream! Stay true to yourself!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just get started! There will never be a perfect moment!
  2. In the beginning, say yes to every project - make notes of things you learn and things you do/don't want to repeat. In the early days, stay humble, and learn through every opportunity and project!
  3. Keep up to date with things happening in the industry! So many seasoned business owners are stuck in their way and churning out the same work project after project. Be cutting-edge! Do things differently! Figure out why they do things the way they do! Jump on things before they become trends!
